Roosts

I posted the other day about the arrival of our chickens.  One of the reasons it took us so long to get them was the need to figure out how to house them.  It gets cold here in the winter, ha!  And we couldn't have them wandering around freely as they would eat the garden faster than the pesky grasshoppers.  We were very lucky to have the opportunity to purchase an insulated shed with electricity and a wall heater.  This building has a history of getting small businesses off the ground so we thought it was perfect for us.


Upon it's arrival, it was leveled on railroad ties and then promptly left to beautify the backyard as we were consumed by farmers market.  The husband was finally able to spend some time on over the last few months and fashioned some fun stuff out of wood to make the shed as homey as possible for our girls.

Extra space for the heater

At this point we have roosts installed and protection for the window and heater as well as a chicken door so they can get in and out during the day.  We have some time for nesting boxes as they don't need them until they start laying and we don't want them thinking they are too comfortable before then.  The next big thing to figure out is how to power everything using solar panels.  Next week we figure out how to get them out there.  I think the cat kennels will come in handy for that task.
